Beef Cattle Research

Beef cattle-related activities at the Robinson Center are focused around practical, applied management to aid local cattle producers. Through donations from Kentucky suppliers and a federal grant, a 32x60 foot hoop barn was constructed to demonstrate the rapid rebuilding of livestock facilities following a natural disaster such as floods and tornadoes. The barn is designed to share management practices in confinement facilities. Additionally, external pens were constructed to allow producers to bring cattle to the facility for processing. A portable livestock handling facility was also acquired and can be leased by local producers for their own use. The facility has been utilized by local ANR agents to provide breeding soundness exam clinics to evaluate breeding bulls for the upcoming breeding season. Other recent demonstrations include backgrounding feeder calves prior to marketing, heifer development, including estrus synchronization and artificial insemination, as well as finishing cattle for local beef markets.
